July 13, 2010 – Steve Kagen Switches Vote on Transparency for the Federal Reserve
APPLETON, Wisconsin — Congressman Steve Kagen was previously on the record in support of HR 1207, a bill to give the Government Accountability Office (GAO) the authority to audit the Federal Reserve to obtain precise details about Fed activities. While there is a system of checks and balances for most branches of the government, the Fed remains untouched and unexamined.
But in a vote on June 30, Kagen shifted and voted with 228 other Democrats to oppose an audit of the Federal Reserve (source: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/roll412.xml). The bill, authored by Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, received bipartisan support earlier in the year, with 320 members of Congress co-sponsoring it — including Steve Kagen.
Twenty-three Democrats crossed over to vote with the Republicans to audit the Fed, which was included in a bill to fix previously passed and unpopular derivatives measures. Despite overwhelming support from the public, Kagen switched to oppose audit of the Federal Reserve.
Republican candidate for Congress Terri McCormick criticized Kagen’s vote switch: “I want to go to Congress to audit the Federal Reserve and to audit other agencies that are not being good stewards of hard-earned taxpayer dollars,” said McCormick.
“Why did Congressman Kagen support the Audit the Fed bill and then vote against auditing the Fed? Was it simply to put his party ahead of northeast Wisconsin voters?” asked McCormick.
“If elected to Congress, I will work to make our government fully accountable. I have a record of achievement and reform to back up my promises,” she concluded.
